Toyota Kirloskar Motors launched not one, not two but three new models at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. Of these, we’ll bring you the story of the 2012 Toyota Innova first. The Toyota Innova MPV is a legend of sorts, both with the upmarket MPV buyer as well as the cabbie crowd. Such is the solid engineering and bomb proof reliability of this MPV that it has gone on to become a best seller right from the word go.
When the Innova first arrived in India to replace the ultra successful Toyota Qualis, it had big boots to fill. But fill it did with a car like refinement and drive, qualities that immediately endeared this MPV to Toyota loyalists and new customers alike. Today, we happened to be in an Innova cab that had done over 1.75 Lakh kilometers and the only stuff that needed replacement all along was the engine oil, fluids and other consumables. The cabbie hadn’t even bothered to change the timing belt.
This is what prospective Toyota Innova MPV buyers will buy the Innova for and with the facelift, Toyota has delivered a product that builds on all the good qualities of the Innova, albeit in a fresher form factor. While looks haven’t been a high point of the Innova with even the latest facelift looking like a job done merely for the sake of it, the reliability and functionality is expected to keep the Innova brand sailing high even as competition intensifies.

The new 2012 Innova gets a new front end replete with new headlamps, fog lamps and a flatter front grille. Interiors get a once over with a touch screen display in car entertainment unit dominating the center console. The Innova also gets steering mounted controls. So, Toyota it seems has taken buyer feedback quite seriously and improved what was a good MPv to begin with anyway. All in all, the 2012 Innova is a decent effort although the constantly north bound price of this MPV isn’t going to help matters at the hustings.
The Innova is priced between INR 9.4 Lakhs to INR 13.19 Lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi and at that price, doesn’t have an automatic transmission to show for even on the top end variant. The petrol and diesel engines are retained and so is the five speed gearbox. So, the Innova might still sell, but this time majorly due to the Toyota brand name and the excellent MPV that it is rather than actually being a product that delivers excellent value.
