Right from the outset, a diesel heart was never in the immediate scheme of things for the Hyundai Eon hatchback, whose 800cc petrol engine meant that the car would sit at the bottom of Hyundai’s portfolio as the brand’s volumes spinning entry level offering. The recent move by Hyundai India, to go slow on its diesel engine plant plans only means that a small capacity diesel engine that could perhaps find its way into the Eon is further away from reality. However, what isn’t is an LPG fuel option for the Hyundai Eon.
Small cars in India, especially the entry level ones like the Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Hyundai Eon are mainly used as city commuters by most of their buyers, who would prefer to take a bus or train for inter city travel. Therefore, a big fuel tank range never really became a show stopper for these cars, which is why LPG, as a fuel choice makes a bunch of sense, even though the fuel is not available on majority of the fuel stations on Indian highways, making refueling a very limited option more suited to the cities.
Given that petrol prices are at all time highs, the argument for dual fuel cars like LPG-Petrol and CNG-Petrol seems more relevant than even before. Hyundai India knows this and hence, will unveil an LPG variant of the Hyundai Eon in early to mid 2012. The LPG variant of the Eon has already been spotted doing the testing rounds on the outskirts of Chennai and it is only a matter of time before the car is launched commercially to be a genuine alternative to diesel as a fuel choice.
As has been the case with most factory fitted LPG kits, the Hyundai Eon LPG could be offered in dual fuel guise with the user being able to toggle between both petrol and LPG. Expect a minor price rise of INR 20 thousand for the Hyundai Eon with the LPG-Petrol dual fuel option. So, if you’re in the market for an economical small car sometime in early to mid 2012, the Hyundai Eon LPG might be well worth a consider.
