The BMW M5, a car meant for businessmen and executives to go around at sub-sonic speeds and if need be, sideways. The M5 has along the years set standards for car makers as to how a super-executive saloon should behave. A car that crammed with technology and over the years has been following the basic rules from the petrolhead handbook, i.e, front front engine and rear wheel drive. Driving fanatics would even marry a car for life if it had this configuration and more so if it were a BMW M5.
So, the BMW M5 has had this layout for years which made it so exciting. Now, BMW might be on the verge of doing something totally out of the petro-sexual handbook. There are rumours that BMW is planning a new version of the BMW M5 sports saloon with a diesel engine under its bonnet. Now, the clunky, rattling oil burners do have come a long way over the years and in fact, the modern diesel engines even match the performance of their petrol counterparts.
We at ICB too love modern diesel engines. The new BMW M5 thus, could also get a diesel. Also, We had earlier reported about the buzz going among the media about an all-wheel drivetrain making a debut on the new BMW M5. We even quizzed Dr. Andreas Schaaf, President, BMW India about the rumours. Even Dr. Schaaf couldn’t verify the reports back then. But, the reports might turn out to be true as the rumours keep intensifying day by day.
BMW will also reveal a new powerplant at the Frankfurt Motor Show later next month. This will be BMW’s new triple-turbocharged, inline six-cylinder diesel engine which could be the powerplant that will propel the all-wheel drive M5 beemer. Expect the new powerplant to be as good as the petrol version and the triad of turbochargers keeping the turbo-lag to a minimum. That said, being a diesel, fuel economy is where the diesel M5 will better its petrol counterpart.
