Hyundai’s new face-lifted i20 hatchback has been spied for the first time in Europe. The new model will feature Hyundai’s new fluidic design which will incorporate the new front end design similar to the new Hyundais of today. Hyundai designers have also made subtle changes to the rear end with the tail light being given the most attention. Also, the headlights up front will get design elements we have seen on the new Hyundai Fluidic Verna. The front grille too will get that unique, Hyundai corporate look.
As far as the dimensions of the car are concerned, the new i20 will be based on the same car we are familiar with hence don’t expect any change in platform. The camouflage though cannot hide the profile of the hatchback also seems unchanged with the roof line falling gradually towards the rear. Now, the Hyundai i20 has been positioned as a premium hatchback in the Indian market. The Hyundai i20 competes with the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Ford Figo.
Hyundai offers the car with both petrol as well as diesel engines but one of the things we don’t like is the soft suspension which does make the ride comfortable but, the drawbacks become clear when four to five people are in the car. The base petrol variant gets a 1.2 litre engine with 80 horsepower on tap and 112 torques while the base diesel variant gets a 1.4 litre CRDi unit with 90PS and 220Nm of torque. Hyundai also offers the i20 with an automatic gearbox which both the Swift and the Figo lack.
We can expect Hyundai to launch the facelift of the i20 later in the year or early next year. Maruti Suzuki will launch the new Swift next week. The new Swift offers a fresh new interior which looks upmarket. The new Swift has already clocked over 50,000 bookings which could make it a big success by the time the new Hyundai i20 breaks cover. Folks at Hyundai will be working their backsides off to launch the new i20 as early as possible to keep up with the Maruti Swift.
