Nissan India will begin exporting its C-segment offering, the Sunny Sedan from March 2012, to markets across the globe, beginning with the Middle East market. This latest announcement by Nissan underscores the importance of its Indian manufacturing unit in the overall scheme of things. Nissan India’s Oragadam plant, off Chennai has been a big exporter of cars. In fact, the automaker exported many more Micra hatchbacks than it sold in the domestic market, a clear pointer to the fact that India is soon emerging as a hub of low cost automotive manufacturing to challenge the likes of China and Brazil.
More exports means more investment in India and also more jobs for Indians, both factors good for our country’s economic growth and prosperity. To accommodate hefty export targets, Nissan will also expand the total production of the Oragadam manufacturing plant to 4 lakh units, doubling the current capacity of 2 lakh units. This increase in production is expected to be completed by March 2012. Currently, Nissan manufactures the Micra hatchback and Sunny sedan in India while other models like the Teana sedan, the X-Train SUV and the 370Z sportscar are brought into India as completely built units(CBU).
The Nissan Sunny was launched last year and is available both in petrol and diesel engined variants. The Sunny’s big strength is its massive back seat, which is much larger than its competitors, offering more comfort and space for its rear seat occupants. A plush ride quality is the other factor that makes the Nissan Sunny sedan a very good car to be chauffeured in. The Sunny comes with driver side airbag and ABS as standard even on the base model, thus scoring highly on safety. Also, the Sunny Diesel is quite fuel efficient too as it runs on the 1.5 liter K9K diesel engine which is both very responsive and frugal.
