Mahindra’s big selling luxury SUV, the XUV500, saw huge demand within days of its phased launch earlier this year, when Mahindra launched the crossover mainly in the metros along with Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. Despite the XUV500 not being available in other cities, the crossover managed to clock 8,000 bookings, forcing Mahindra to stop taking fresh bookings in order to first service existing orders. Mahindra is currently in the process of ramping up capacity at its Chakan manufacturing unit and will reopen XUV500 bookings in January 2012.
As the Mahindra XUV500 Crossover was launched at a very competitive introductory price of INR 10.8 Lakhs for the base model, expect a hike in prices once the bookings reopen for the fresh batch of XUV500s. We’ve seen this happen many years ago when Mahindra launched the Scorpio SUV at a very competitive introductory price, then going on to hike prices after a few months. So, the XUV500 also could be expected to be priced higher than current levels with the fresh batch whose bookings will be accepted from January 2012.

The Mahindra XUV500 crossover is now Mahindra’s new flagship vehicle and comes with a 2.2 Liter common rail turbo diesel engine outputting 140 Bhp of peak power and 330 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a six speed manual gearbox even as Mahindra engineers continue to develop an automatic gearbox for the XUV500. It is just a matter of time before the automatic variant of the XUV500 arrives as Mahindra cannot afford to ignore the lucrative automatic premium SUV market. The XUV500 is currently available in both two wheel drive and all wheel drive options.
