Lamborghini came-up with a two-wheel drive Gallardo recently named after their famous test driver, Valentino Balboni. The supercar was purposely lightened by ditching the heavy four-wheel drive system for a more exciting recipe. The LP550-2 Balboni featured rear-wheel drive unlike any other Lamborghini and a special paint job with an off-set racing stripe running over the length of the car. Aficionados do like the nimbleness infused by a rear-wheel drive setup.
Now, Lamborghini has gone a step further and will introduce a rear-wheel drive only Gallardo Spyder in the form of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 (?) Spyder . But, you won’t get the stripe that defined the Balboni special edition Gallardo nor would you get to call it by a cool name of an ex-Lambo test driver. However, you will get a convertible supercar that sounds as glorious as the chirping of morning birds and as loud as the howls of howler monkeys.
The source of all this pantomime is the 5.4 litre V10 engine in a de-tuned state than in the original Gallardo but equally loud. It could be called the LP550-2 instead of LP560-4 which is what Lamborghini call their four-wheel drive convertible model. By losing the front driveshafts, the Gallardo manages to shed 30 kg off its back compared to its four-wheel drive cousin. That said, the new car will be cheaper than the four-wheel drive Spyder version.
The two-wheel drive Gallardo Spyder will be close to Rs 8 lakh less than the 4WD Gallardo Spyder which, compared to its closest rival the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is a bargain. Both cars get neatly folding soft-tops but the similarities between the two end at that. The SLS Roadster is powered by a AMG tuned V8 engine and emits a throaty V8 rumble when revved hard unlike the V10 of the Lambo that just screams until your hair on the back of your neck stand on end.
