Months ago, the Honda City was struggling to sell with the Volkswagen Vento ,first, and then the Hyundai Verna Fluidic comprehensively outselling Honda’s flagship model. A price cut of INR 66,000 however seems to have turned the tide for the Honda City Sedan, which was losing ground rapidly due to it being overpriced for the features it offered.

In August 2011, the Honda City has raced to a stupendous 5,819 units while the Hyundai Verna Fluidic and the Volkswagen Vento managed 4,211 and 3,019 units respectively. With these latest sales numbers, the Honda City has staged a brilliant comeback in the highly competitive C-Segment Sedan space in the Indian car market.
What is even more remarkable is the fact that the Honda City has managed to achieve these high numbers despite not having a diesel engine in its portfolio. Notably, the Honda City’s main rivals, the Hyundai Verna Fluidic and the Volkswagen Vento Sedan come with both petrol and diesel engines with the former offering customers no less than 10 variants spread across 4 engine options.

On the other hand, the petrol engined Honda City is available in only 4 major variants and this makes its August 2011 sales performance even more stunning, not to forget the fact that these numbers come a time when demand for petrol cars have shown a steep dip in an Indian car market in the throes of an overall slowdown in car sales.
Quite frankly, we’re quite surprised at the Honda City’s superb sales performance in August and we’re quite eager to see whether the City can sustain this momentum given that the Indian festive season is just around the corner. Amongst other things, the highly capable Fiat Linea continues its downward spiral with an abysmal 113 units sold.

Now that number is even lower than one of the lowest seller in the Indian C-Segment market, the Chevrolet Aveo Sedan which sold 126 units, and that is a shame indeed, for the Fiat Linea Sedan is a fine car that deserves much more success than it has been getting. The Maruti Suzuki SX4 sold a decent 1,893 units in August 2011.
The other big story of the segment, the new Ford Fiesta Sedan also has slipped further down, to register a sales number of 401 units, which simply means that the market has rejected the optimistic pricing strategy of Ford India. Coming to the lowest sellers of the segment, the Mitsubishi Lancer and Cedia managed a meager total of 59 units.
