VOLKSWAGEN PLANS A SEVEN SEATER SUV THAT IS BIGGER BUT CHEAPER THAN THE TOUAREG!

The Volkswagen Touareg SUV, based on Volkswagen’s PL71 SUV platform is available in India. Its siblings in the form of Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7 too are available in India. Yet, the Touareg is a distant third when it comes to sales. One development that could however change this happened a couple of days ago in the United States of America when Volkswagen America Chief Executive Jonathan Browning told The Detroit News that Volkswagen was considering a seven seater SUV that would be bigger but cheaper than the Touareg.

Initial details about what exactly the SUV would feature under the hood remains unknown at the moment given the fact that the seven seater SUV is still in the feasibility study stage. If it does get produced, expect a range of Volkswagen TDI turbo diesel engines to go under the bonnet along with perhaps a hybrid option too thrown in given the growing trend of diesel hybrid SUVs.  While no mention was made whether the model would be an America-only phenomenon, the sheer costs involved in developing such a vehicle means that Volkswagen could very well sell such an SUV in many if its global markets.
Amongst the global markets that Volkswagen operates in, India is one market where Volkswagen hasn’t really been able to make an impression on with its high end cars like the Phaeton, Passat and the Touareg SUV. Perhaps the new seven seater SUV could be a good bet for the Indian luxury SUV market. That said, it is still very early days to come to any conclusion. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled out for a big seven seater SUV that Volkswagen might indeed make sometime in the future.
