Mitsubishi has launched a special edition of its premium SUV, the Outlander. The limited edition Mitsubishi Outlander Chrome gets new aesthetic elements on the exterior and the interior along with a few more gadgets inside. The limited edition model gets a roof mounted spoiler, chrome finished ORVMs, body protection mouldings on the sides as far as exterior features are concerned. On the inside, the Outlander is fitted with a roof-mounted DVD player with screen connected to the Rockford audio system and blue illumination under the dashboard which seems a bit too garish.
A limited edition model with all the exterior stuff and the interior lighting etc. is the least that the Outlander needed. What Mitsubishi should have done is offered a diesel engine on the Outlander which why the SUV is not selling compared to others in the segment. Last month, Mitsubishi sold 33 units of the Outlander while on an average, the Japanese automaker has been selling around 44 Outlanders in 2011. Toyota managed to clock 1060 units of the Fortuner which is a lot compared to the 33 units of the Outlander.
Mitsubishi Outlander Chrome- features
A diesel engine is what could revive the sales of the Mitsubishi Outlander and offering such special edition bits won’t matter much. Mitsubishi should also learn from their counterparts at Honda who are facing the same problem with the Honda CR-V. The CR-V has been doing similar numbers at the Mitsubishi Outlander. Last month Honda sold 41 units of the CR-V. The Japanese seem to be missing the point here. What the customers need is a diesel product.
Also, it will be better if Mitsubishi bring a diesel variant of the Outlander as soon as possible as they do have an advantage over the Honda CR-V when it comes to drivetrain. The Outlander has four-wheel drive which the Honda lacks. The current Outlander has a 2.4 litre petrol engine with 170 PS and 226 Nm coupled to a INVECS-III CVT with 6-speeds.
